For a new tattoo is it okay to put a piece of cloth between the tattoo and your clothing?

Or anything like that? Such as between your tattoo and jeans or a bra strap? I know it would be best not to, but if it is necessary is there any way to protect the tattoo from being rubbed wrong? Not necessarily for a long period of time.
